Bryn and Sue Burnett have advised that after four years of coordinating the VTA events, they will only be able to assist in a limited capacity this year. They wish to thank
the support of sponsors over the years, and also the many other volunteers who have helped make the last four years such a success.
The VTA is in a stable financial position and they have assured that the Tusker Triathlon du Paradis will continue to be a significant international event on the Vanuatu calendar in the future. However this year, unforeseen events have conspired against us but we will still be holding the event on Sunday 16 September.
With the loss of the Rossi car park and transition area and hence access to the swim course, this year's event will be a duathlon from Korman stadium and will be the same format as our normal club August duathlon. Apologies to the strong swimmers out there. The whole Rossi complex is a building site
at the moment as a new development is being built, so a new venue may have to be sought for next year's Tusker Tri du Paradis.
The Anchor Kids Tryathlon series at Le Meridien commenced Sunday 27 May under the guidance of Rod and Karin O'Connor and is being held
for four months on the last Sunday of the month. Registration commences sharp at 0800 at Le Meridien Beach. Thanks to Anchor and Le Meridien for
their continued support. Rod and Karin can be contacted at ph 25702 or email oconnor@vanuatu.com.vu
Record Runners for AFA Fun Run
held Saturday 21 July results
A record 120 runners started the 5th annual AFA Insurance Fun Run last Saturday. Looking resplendent in their AFA shirts, many runners milling around the start were heard to say that this is going to be fun! During the run the comments from the slower runners were, “Why am I doing this?”, however at the end all seemed to be
looking forward to next year. This run again proved to be a great workout for the Round Island Relay, with overall winner Jack Nawia and junior Samson Eddie showing assets they would be for any RIR team.
What a finish we had with Jack just out sprinting Samson by 2 seconds in a time of 35mins 44 seconds ahead of category runners-up Joe Iautu and Romeo Peter less than a minute behind. Next was Enosi Nausiak who was third in the juniors while Timothy came third in the men. It was creditable that the first eleven runners finished inside 40 minutes and even more interesting that seven of that eleven were juniors. This shows great potential among the Ni-Vanuatu young runners. Athletics coaches out there please take note!
In the other categories Medelan Nalan took out the women’s title from Jenny Harders and Sabrina Mankon but they were outshone by junior female Nale Iamas by three minutes and who showed a clean pair of heels to Jeanette and Joyce Nahum in second and third respectively. In the vet category Philip Monagle and John Peter easily beat olfala Bryn Burnett but all three were the only ones to do a time in minutes less than their age. In the women’s vet category Hashers Maggie Crawford and Vanessa Robinson took out first and second ahead of a Theresa Hakwa who was quite chuffed with her time and that there were several runners behind her.
There were heaps of lucky number prizes for the also rans, and special prizes for the youngest and oldest Steven Tanga (8) and Bryn (60) respectively. Overall this was another well organised event by Peter Griffiths and his AFA team assisted by the Vanuatu Triathlon Association, with great support from the spectators enroute, from Mele Maat through Mele and Tagabe to the finish.
